Choice Under Code: Algorithmic Nudging on Gig Worker Behaviour
Abstract
Digital labour platforms introduce new forms of workplace governance through algorithms. This study examines how algorithmic nudges such as gamified targets, dynamic incentives, dashboard cues, and rating-linked prompts shape the everyday behaviour of gig workers in Kerala's platform economy, with particular attention to ride-hailing and food-delivery work. The analysis shows that platforms can influence workers' decisions through algorithms, rather than through direct supervision, while workers continue to be treated as independent. Findings indicate that gig workers experience nudges as simultaneously enabling and constraining, like incentives help workers earn independently, but also limit their choices by affecting their ratings and income.
